Q: Why is Avila Beach best for learning?
A: Avila Beach is the best place to learn how to surf because of the unique ocean conditions. Avila is more shallow in comparison to other surrounding beaches, so you don’t get the worn out feeling due to paddling to the break. Waves here in Avila are also calmer and give you a longer ride. This beach is also monitored by the on-duty lifeguards, and provides showers to rinse off after!
Q: What do I bring to my lesson or camp?
A: For a lesson: We ask that you bring a swimsuit, water, sunscreen, a towel, and any other beach necessities you desire.
For surf camp: We ask that your child brings a swimsuit, plenty of water, a snack, (if full day please bring a packed lunch and a snack), a towel, sunscreen, and any other beach necessities.
Q:How long is the lesson?
A: A private lesson for one person is an hour and a half. Group lessons are 2 hours.
Q: What is your age requirement?
A: Surf camps are for kids ages 7-17. For surf lessons, we will take any age. The oldest person we've taught was 83 years old, which shows it's never too late to try something new!
Q: What will I learn?
A: You will gain the basic knowledge and understanding of the ocean, surfing technique, equipment, and safety. We teach you about body placement on the surfboard, how to read and choose a wave, and the steps you need to stand up and catch a wave.
Q: Where do I meet you?
A: Our surf truck is parked on San Francisco Street near the pier in Avila Beach. Meet us there to get suited up and grab your surfboard!
Q: What if I have a disability?
A: Our motto is: Any Age, Any Ability, Anyone. We will do our absolute best to adapt and learn alongside any need.
Q: Can I come watch my kid?
A: We hope that you will come and watch your child! Learning how to surf is an absolute joy that we hope the parents can participate in!
Q: What if I already know how to surf?
A: We offer surf lessons at other surrounding beach locations to our advanced surfers that may offer more challenging surf conditions to continue to learn and grow your surfing techniques. We do need to know the level of experience so that our instructors can make a good judgement call in regards to the lesson.
Q: What if I already have my own surf equipment?
A: You are more than welcome to bring your own equipment: wetsuit, surfboard, etc. We do ask that if you bring a board, that it is a foam board, for safety precautions.
Q: Do you rent equipment?
A: We rent both wetsuits and surfboards. Meet us at the truck and we can get you suited up! If no one is at the truck, give us a call, and we'll help you out!
Q: Where should I park?
A: If you can find a spot in one of the parking lots or streets near our location, we encourage you to do so! If there are none available, there is a public parking lot located on first street that offers all day parking for a small fee.
Q: What payment methods do you accept?
A: We accept all forms of payment: cash, credit card, checks, and our gift certificates.
